Silent Night

Well, I needed to have something to work on with the new Godin Multiac Nylon SA; thanks to Justinguitar.com for the excellent version of Silent Night that I just added to my page. This was recorded with a Zoom H4; one mic was directed at the guitar's top, the other at the Danelectro Dirty Thirty that I brought along over Christmas Vacation. I received the guitar the day that I left (the Tuesday prior to Christmas), and I wanted to be able to give folks a listen to the sound, so I brought along t… Continue

Six String Bliss - a great Podcast and online community

Sorry I haven't been around for a while. I've actually started taking my computer time and spending it practicing guitar! (I know, I know - about time!)

Anyway, one of my rare computer indulgences is Six String Bliss. This is a really fun and lively Podcast done by a couple of college friends (now in their 30's). They're regular guys, and they talk about all things guitar. The web site is www.sixstringbliss.com, and you can subscribe thr… Continue

Another Anim

In 1992 (or thereabouts) I started working sound for Lori’s band, Mama Anim. I had just left 60 Cycle Hum (a name I still LOVE!), and knew I could contribute as a soundman and guitar tech. Mama Anim was basically a funk cover band, and they did a lot of really great material. The name came from their guitarists, who, being from Alabama tended to greet people with an amicable “How’s your mama anim” (How’s your mama and them). Since no one else was from Alabama, and we all thought it was freaking… Continue

So, is that improvisation?

Honestly, I had known about this group for a while before barging joining in. You see, the entire Title of the group had me thinking that it wasn't me. I've been in my current band (on and off) since 2000, and we are decidedly not a jam band.

We started working on a recording in 2004, and still aren't finished with it. We're doing it all home-spun, and since there's nobody to flog us into completing the project, we probably never will. It's not uncommon for me… Continue

About the songs...

Here's a little rundown on the songs that are currently posted:

Dark and Scary Night

This is a long-distance collaboration with Frank Schultz, who sent me tunes that he had already done as MESH, with his guitar parts taken out. That's my Ibanez Silver Series through my old rig – Ampeg VH-140C fed by a Korg A3 processor (the effects patches are all original).

Opus de Funk

This was a "challenge" by a friend who recorded the drums in a Pro-Tools plug-in called "twiddly bits". He gave it to M… Continue

Ok - so when I actually get some recording gear, I will be more than happy to post some things. I was mostly thinking about posting riffs that I had come up with that I liked and sharing them to see perhaps if others like them, and what others might do with them. I think it would be a lot of fun in this group of "improvising guitarists" to "improvise" across the internet by sharing riffs and phrases. I'd be thrilled to take material provided by others and seeing that I might do with it. I hope others feel similarly...

As to our Czech friends making Soldano-type and Orange-type Randall RM modules, I've been in touch. d00d wants $200.00 to modify a module - which I'm ok with, but it's going to take some time to execute on. I got bills like everyone else. :)

When I get those modules into the bullpen I'll let you know.

Oh and the guitars? Well, you may have noticed I have "Equipment" and "Projects"... Projects are works in progress. Equipment is functioning stuff. As for the guitars I've bought a few sets of pickups. I bought a couple of "Attackbuckers" from www.guitarattack.com, which are new pickups wound to replicate the pickup in Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstrat. My body has a rear-routed control cavity as I've no interest in recreating Eddie's guitar - just want to be able to dial in the tone if I want.

On eBay, I got a neck/bridge set of MightyMite "motherbuckers" which have something crazy like 25k DC resistance (the Attackbucker, if it follows spec, would be about 9.2k) but it's gotten rave reviews on HC and for $45.00 for the set, I decided to take the plunge. I figured they would go into the Warmoth Explorer project. I've got a Duncan SH-5 Custom that I'll drop in the Dinky project (I have an old ESP reverse-chisel headstock neck that I'm going to use) and managed to find an out-of-production DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Solo single-coil stack (noise-cancelling) for the neck position. Looking forward to that. Time to find some tuning keys and some locking vibratos.

As pieces come out of the pipeline, I'll post pictures as projects get underway, and as they are completed... :)

Thanks for posting that Randall RM-12 on my page. You actually OWN that? I read on the Randall Forum that that piece was only available to dealers! That's incredible! :)

Also on the Randall Forum, there's a guy in the Czech Republic who does modifications to modules (along with our own USA guys), but takes the modules way out of their original spec. He's modified a Modern to replicate an SLO 100 and a Tweed to emulate an Orange 120. I'm very seriously considering getting another Modern and picking up a used Tweed on ebay to send to him...

Well as long as I can return the favor to Lori... :) And yes, the comment made me pee in my pants happy. Cheers,
Frank

thanks larry, I used to be really bad at fingerpicking, but learning alot of the acoustic opeth songs really built it up for us. i'm working out a drum rhythm to the interesting song. Also i really need to give them proper names. I'm home over the weekend so i'm going to record a few more ideas i have. i'm also off to test out a soldano decatone head and 2x 4x12's. a local guitarist is moving to india and wants to sell the amp to us as he know's ill love it. How are things on your end? you got much planned for your weekend ahead?

Hello, thanks for your nice words! Well, I just try keeping things simple. What you hear is mainly my Strat (fretted and fretless) and Les Paul through Guitar rig 3. If I have the opportunity though I just use my trusty Tech 21 amp and a few (4) pedals on stage...

Hey Larry. Dig your sound man. I started out on "Neutron Star" because neutron stars are cool (ever read a book called "Dragons Egg"?). It's really sciency, written by a PHD astrophysicist, but he does a good job of making it only sufficiently dense. I've been gearing up for medical school in the fall and haven't gotten a chance to listen to it all yet, but I'll let you know when I get a chance to. I've of course heard YL (been playing with him since I was a teenager), and got to listen to Paul some. Listening to Dark and Stormy Night right now. I'm totally disillusioned with the music industry, and my music isn't paricularly exciting anyway, but I'm planning on putting together an album just for fun. It sounds to me like you have a unique sound and should put an album together...(now have listened to about 2/3 of your songs, what Isaid prior still holds, cool stuff).. just a thought...

Hey Larry! Thanks for the note. I'll add some more content this summer. I'm working toward a Master's right now, and with 3 classes, a wife and 3 kids, and a 50+ hour a week job, I need the caffiene just to get it all done! :-) I want to do some recording with my brother (the Superman guy on this forum) and maybe we'll post some collaberative content. Good to hear from you!
