Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel in an improvising duet consisting of Theremin and Lap Steel. These instruments are processed live via VST effects and recorded to 2 track. The lap steel is new for me and has been an interesting journey. Improvising with the lap steel has helped me "think" and rethink guitar, improvisation, and self.
We have been performing for several years, typically 5-6 shows a year. We just finished up a small (11 day) tour with with our friends Good Noise Bad Noise from the UK and played a show in Asheville last month that was sponsored by Moog Music (Etherfest). I did get to hold the new Moog guitar and the duet got to do a short improv with Jason (with Moog who is showcasing the guitar) playing the Moog prototype.
Guitar has been my main instrument and improvisation has always been a big part of attraction to music and performing. In Atlanta (at eyedrum) there is a program called First Thursday that is an open improvisation session for any and all. We have found percussion and instruments, to traditional free jazz players, to electronoise, etc. ... you name it, it comes out to play. There are random parings, duos, trios, etc. and at the end of the evening there is a conduction in which 15-20 people are all on stage and being "conducted" by Robert Cheatham (the organizer).
This is where I learned to listen, which I think is the most important skill in improvising (with other people). First Thursday also gave me an opportunity to experiment and play with "prepared" instruments. For many months I would only bring and play prepared instruments that were devised that afternoon. Which made going back to "plain old" guitar even more exhilarating.
More about this stuff later. I am glad to be here and look forward to listening to the work here and chatting with you alll.
Cheers,
Frank
